Traditional Dinka Marriage

When someone falls in love and chooses to follow the traditional path the first step is to tell his relatives that he would like to declare engagement. That means his best friend has to set a time to meet with elders to inform them of his friends’ interest to be engaged. This step serves as an assurance of seriousness. What follows is that the elders send a message to the girl’s relatives saying that they are coming as their guest. This means they are coming to propose their son. They bring ten cows as part of the dowry, proposing to the girl’s family then leaving without an answer.

Declaration of interest in engagement

The girl’s relatives then have to decide whether or not their daughter will be engaged, with a family background check-up and personal responsibilities checks, that is, respect for others, caring attitude, ability to handle difficult tasks and his relationship with other family members. If all is clear, the message is delivered at a big ceremony.

Acceptance of engagement proposal

The bride’s relatives send a message to the groom’s relatives and both invite their family and community to the engagement declaration. After the event, the couple starts dating and the groom may come to the girl’s home and stay for hours.

Relatives marriage agreement

The girl’s relatives decide the time of the meeting for the marriage agreement. On the day they will discuss the dowry and this will depend on the extended family members who consider whether to receive a heifer, calf, cow or bull. They must agree on the number of cows to be paid by the groom’s relatives.

Submission of dowry

The groom’s relatives will bring the selected cows to the bride’s relatives. The girl’s relatives can reject some heifers, calves, cows or bulls.
